CARO — Always an outdoorsy kid, Wyatt Waterman was driven to create his own business as a child.
“I always liked to be hands on, and when I was 11 or 12 years old, my dad and I came up with the idea of starting a landscaping company. It was originally just a lawn mowing company,” said Waterman, owner of Waterman Lawn & Snow.
After getting his first account, Waterman’s business has grown substantially.
“My first account when I was 12 years old was just down the road in my subdivision. Her name is Mrs. (Judy) Atkinson, and I still have that account to this day. I treat it, I mow it. After that, I kept adding on year after year,” said Waterman.
Waterman’s clientele has expanded to include commercial customers, including all of the Frankenmuth Credit Unions in the Thumb and others in the surrounding region. Waterman also does landscaping for Pine Crest Estates here in Caro.
“Just in general, I’ve built great relationships with all my commercial and residential clientele,” explained Waterman.
Waterman Lawn & Snow has significantly expanded its services over the past few years, with the business being insured and licensed for lawn applications.
“Several of the things I offer are lawn treatments such as broadleaf and weed control, dandelion control, fertilization, grub and mole control and insect control. We’ve been doing that for two years now. My dad (Troy Waterman) has the license and I’m learning under him right now, so we are licensed,” said Waterman.
The LLC’s services also include landscaping work, cleanups in the spring and fall, and snow removal during the winter months.
While working outside with his hands is something Waterman is passionate about doing, operating his business while still in school did not come without sacrifice, especially when adding three sports into the mix.
“When I was a three-sport athlete, I’d work after school before practice, and then after practice as well. That would also lead to me working on the weekends usually, so I was always busy. Especially during basketball season when it was snow plowing season, I’d be working long nights plowing, and the next morning or afternoon I’d have basketball practice,” said Waterman of his work routine while in high school.
The business has taught Waterman valuable skills he could not have learned in a traditional classroom environment that have helped him to expand Waterman Lawn & Snow.
“I’ve learned how to manage time and create a schedule. I’ve learned how to explain and negotiate pricing with customers and clients. We’ve had a Facebook page that I created, Waterman Lawn & Snow LLC, and I learned how to build it up and provide content of all of my work to everybody so they can see it for advertising. I also learned how to create an LLC for this business to make sure it’s registered and everything,” said Waterman.
“I’ve learned how to install landscaping like rocks and stones, plants etc. and also how to maintain and upkeep it. I’ve also learned how to operate the equipment in order to install it and upkeep it.”
With Waterman out of high school, he is looking to expand things even further, especially when it comes to lawn treatment accounts.
“Now that I’m out of high school, I’m just looking to expand it even more and have it become my full-time job. I basically already had the business foundation set, it’s just now that I’m out of high school, I have more time to expand it.”
As the owner of the business himself, Waterman feels deeply tied to his work and the results he provides to his customers.
“I take a lot of pride in my accounts. The best thing about this job is that you can really clean up people’s yards, you get the glory of making it look great, it makes you feel good. We take pride in our work,” he concluded.
